PROPOSAL
Week 1
I decided that my topic would be about background art. Since I'm planning to specialize in entertainment design I'm quite passionate about conceptual art in animations and games. I feel like the works of background artists tend to go unnoticed, and people usually have the misconception that the characters in animation/videogame is what makes it good. However, I strongly believe that the setting is what drives the story.
Feedback:
Ms Jinchi and Dr Hayati said that my topic was good.
Week 2
My research topic is "The importance of background art" and I began working on the rationale.
Feedback:
Dr Hayati said my topic is too vague, and I should focus on either culture or social design.
Week 3
I changed my research topic to "How culture is represented in background art", I also started working on my slides in which I included the problem statement. It was really hard trying to find articles or references for this topic as no one has really done any research on it. Most of closest sources I found only talked about cultural elements in animations as a whole, not specifically in background art. When I consulted Dr Hayati about whether I could research about "cultural representation in animation" instead, she said it was too vague and that it doesn't relate to my specialization.
Feedback:
Dr Hayati said that my topic is still too vague and that I should narrow it down to a specific culture.
Week 4
Dr Hayati said my topic is too vague, and I should focus on either culture or social design.

Week 4
I created a rough draft of my rationale and problem statement using some articles I found online. When I approached Dr Hayati about my proposal she said that the topic was too vague and I should narrow it down. It also wasn't particularly beneficial to me in the future as in my problem statement I talked a lot about the inequalities in wages between character designers and background artists, which is something I can't control nor is it useful for me.
I decided to redo my topic and I changed it to the "impact and effectiveness of character customization in games". Dr Hayati said it was a good topic but I should rephrase it as "a study in character customization" instead, since "impact" connotes a negative meaning and it was more of a PhD topic.
Week 5
I compiled my new proposal into google slides. Here's the final compilation:
