INSTRUCTIONS

PROJECT 1

Week 8

Using our key artwork, we had to create a poster based on it. I initially wanted to go back to my black background but Mr Vinod still said no. So, I opted for something a little more colorful. Here are the different backgrounds I used:
Fig 1.0 First Poster design

Fig 1.01 Second Poster design

Fig 1.02 Third Poster design

Fig 1.03 Fourth Poster design

Fig 1.04 Fifth Poster design

Fig 1.05 Sixth Poster design
Mr Vinod said that the ones with a gradient background worked the best as it doesn't distract the viewer from the key artwork. He then mentioned that it should enhance the meaning of my artwork.

Week 9
Fig 1.06 First Collateral Shirt

Fig 1.07 First Collateral Tote Bag

Fig 1.08 Second Collateral Shirt
Mr Vinod told me to show more variety in the key artwork, since it still remained the same. I redesigned the totebag and shirt, which he then approved.

FEEDBACK

Week 8

Mr Vinod's comment on facebook: Some of them are to disturbing that it takes away importance from the key artwork. The first one of the gradients are lesser in variety and more neutral in shares may work. Keep in mind that what you do in the background must enhance your concept.

Week 9

Mr Vinod's comment on facebook: You can introduce minor elements but can’t introduce new elements in every collateral. Also, try to avoid using completely new elements. You can’t just change the type and image combo without reference of your key artwork.

REFLECTION

Experience

Week 8
It wasn't easy to get a suitable background for my poster, as I thought that black worked really well but Mr Vinod wanted something that was brighter, as black usually connotes a darker meaning

Week 9

For some reason, I struggled a lot with the collateral and I couldn't really figure out how else I could show variety in my key artwork. But I eventually managed to come up with a suitable and consistent design.

Observations

Week 8
I have a better sense of layout and I'm starting to get used to using the word spacing tool in illustrator to make my words fill up a space.

Week 9

After looking at merchandise from various companies, I have a better understanding of how to design collateral.

Findings

Week 8
While at first, I thought the image with the textured paint strokes looked good when I first searched it up, but when I overlayed the text it just didn't sit well with me. I realised that the gradient one worked the best since it didn't distract the viewer from the key artwork or the fonts.

Week 9

I learned that you should only introduce minor elements and not completely new elements when creating a collateral.

I read an article called "How to diversify your shop with typography" by Kristen Winklebaur, which talks about how to make effective merchandise by using typography. This was really helpful since I was struggling with my collateral. One part that stood out to me is that you shouldn't over complicate your design, in fact, sometimes the more simple it is the more aesthetic it will be.
