Week 9: Project 1
This week we began our first project in which we had to create an illustration based on a passage that was assigned to us. From the passage, we are required to choose a decisive moment to draw. The passage that I got was called Old Folks Home: Uncle Fong, here are my notes that summarizes it:
The reason why I chose that particular part as a decisive moment is because towards the end, uncle Fong talks a lot about wanting to go overseas and travel, it's a big dream that he clearly wants to achieve and I feel like that really defines his character: someone who is ambitious and hopeful. I also thought that it would be a really nice atmosphere to draw the sunset at the beach.

For my sketch, I made it have a somewhat dreamy concept with the beach in a "cloud". I made the uncle Fong smile to emphasize on the happy feeling he gets when he talks about it as seen in the passage. Mr Hafiz said that I have a good composition, so after I got his approval I quickly went on draw it on illustrator.
I added a beach seat with a small drink to accentuate on the holiday theme. Once I was done with tracing it using the pen tool, I went on to color it.
I made a few minor changes: I added more patterns around the "cloud", instead of two layers of waves I changed it to a flat sea to have a sense of calmness and I drew small mountains in the distance. I also changed the design of the beach seat as the previous one seemed too complicated.
I moved on to adding gradient to create depth.
I tried use more unique colors to blend. For example, I blended yellow and a very light pink for the sun. For the sea, I mixed blue and yellow to make it seem as if the light from the sun is being reflected.
Next up, I added textures such as grain and canvas.

I moved on to adding gradient to create depth.
Next up, I added textures such as grain and canvas.
Finally, for the final touch ups I overlayed a few textures to create a vintage look to make it seem as if it's an old photograph.
